Virology Research
Many laboratories at Penn study virology, focusing on viral replication, the host response, and viral countermeasures. For example APOBEC3G, the host-encoded restriction factor targeted by HIV Vif, was discovered in the Microbiology Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Today many pathogenic viruses of humans are under study, including SARS-CoV-2, HIV, influenza, polyomavirus, Merkel Cell Carcinoma virus, Herpes virus, and bunyaviruses including Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever and Rift Valley fever viruses. HIV researchers in the program work closely with the Penn Center for AIDS Research; researchers focusing on tumor viruses work closely with the Tumor Virology Program; researchers working on bacterial viruses work closely with the PennCHOP Microbiome Program. Research on Coronaviruses takes place in the context of the new Penn Center for Research on Coronaviruses and Other Emerging Pathogens. Research on Influenza is accelerated by the Center for Excellence in Influenza Research and Response.
