Bio Statement

Ryan McAuley, MD, MPH, FACP, FAAP is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He works clinically as an adult oncology hospitalist and is a Fellow in Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Dr. McAuley also serves as Director of Operations for Global Graduate Medical Education with the Penn Center for Global Health and is a Faculty Scholar with the Center.

Dr. McAuley’s clinical and public health interests focus on global health and vulnerable populations, particularly refugee and migrant health, disaster response, global palliative care, and medical education in resource-limited settings. From 2014–2018, he completed several missions with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders in South Sudan and Egypt, where he provided emergency healthcare to conflict-affected populations, migrants, asylum seekers, and victims of torture. From 2019–2021, he was based in Hanoi, Vietnam as part of the Vingroup–Penn Alliance, serving as the inaugural Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at VinUniversity. He continues to support the program in his current role at Penn.

Dr. McAuley completed his MD at East Tennessee State University and an MPH in Humanitarian Assistance at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He trained in the combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (“Med-Peds”) residency at the University of Pennsylvania and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he also completed the Global Health Equities Track through the Botswana–Penn Partnership, returning to Botswana on three occasions. He served as Chief Resident for the Med-Peds program in 2015–2016.

Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Dr. McAuley is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP). In addition to his academic and clinical roles, he has held a variety of global and domestic positions, including with the Indian Health Service at the Tuba City Regional Healthcare Center in Arizona. His work reflects a career-long commitment to expanding equitable access to high-quality care for underserved and vulnerable populations worldwide.

Recent global health projects

From 2021–2025, Dr. McAuley served as Director of Operations for Graduate Medical Education (GME) for the Vingroup–Penn Alliance, overseeing the development and implementation of innovative residency and faculty training programs in Hanoi, Vietnam. In this role, he led the design of a comprehensive six-month introductory course for first-year residents in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and General Surgery, and spearheaded the creation of an extensive didactic curriculum for the Internal Medicine Residency program. This active-learning–based curriculum incorporated evidence-based medicine and best clinical practices, encompassing more than 180 individual lectures across a wide range of clinical topics.

Dr. McAuley also advanced clinical faculty development at VinUniversity and Vinmec International Hospital by developing and serving as Course Director for the Master Clinical Educator Academy (MCEA). This structured three-step program was designed to prepare mid-career practicing physicians with limited teaching experience for effective clinical education roles, building capacity for high-quality residency training in Vietnam.

In addition, from 2023–2025, Dr. McAuley served as Site Lead and Faculty Supervisor for VinUniversity Resident Observerships at the University of Pennsylvania, strengthening cross-institutional collaboration and providing mentorship to visiting residents in Philadelphia.
